Muswellbrook, with its estimated population of 10,707 people, is one of the more populous towns in the state of New South Wales. Situated geologically on the northern edges of the Sydney Basin in the Upper Hunter Valley region (bordering the New England region), this country town is located 243 kilometres (about 264 kilometres by road) north-north-west of the metropolitan city of Sydney, the state capital. Established as a township in 1833, it is believed to have gotten its name from a nearby stream called Muscle Creek (the name Muswellbrook is a corruption of "Muscle Brook"). The area was discovered by Chief Constable John Howe in 1819.

Part of the Muswellbrook Shire Local Government Area, the town of Muswellbrook belongs to the State District of Upper Hunter (an electoral district in the Legislative Assembly of New South Wales) and the Federal Division of Hunter (one of several Australian Electoral Divisions). Muswellbrook was declared a municipality first in 1870.
