Distinguished and Famous people from Muswellbrook

📚 Donald Horne

Donald Horne moved to Muswellbrook at five when his father became a teacher at the local school. He later remembered the town as a place where he could observe a whole social world, from wealthy landholders to families living in poverty. Those childhood impressions entered The Education of Young Donald and helped shape his interest in how Australian society worked. As the author of The Lucky Country and an influential editor and commentator, he became known for challenging comfortable national assumptions. Muswellbrook supplied an early education in reading people as well as books.

🎨 Max Watters

Max Watters was a self-taught artist whose paintings drew on the rural landscapes of the Upper Hunter. His contribution to Muswellbrook also included collecting contemporary Australian art and donating that collection to the community in 2004. The gift helped make significant works available through the regional arts centre. A bronze likeness unveiled in 2021 places him outside the centre, seated rather than elevated on a heroic pedestal. It is an appropriate reminder of a local artist whose legacy involved encouraging access to other people’s work as well as making his own.
